The expanding European colonization of Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia brought the mania for Orientalism into the Western world. Romanticized Eastern exoticism attracted western artists who actively used the Orient themes and motifs in visual arts, architecture, music and performing arts from the beginning of the XIX century.
Orientalism sneaked into the world of fashion design in the 1910s with new fabrics, like silk and chiffon, vivid colours and much more lithe, fluid and soft silhouette. These years are characterized with the popularity of flowing pantaloons, turbans, kimonos, tunics and hobble skirts.

Topic guide "Joaquim Folch i Torres"
“Like Noah in the Ark, in January 1937, during our war, we put the best of our artistic heritage furniture in big lorries; the best example of each type, and we took them to Paris”.

Historian, museologist and art critic, Joaquim Folch i Torres (1886-1963) played a notable role in rescuing and safeguarding the artistic heritage, as well as in the acquisition of works for the art collections of Catalonia.
In 2013, among the events held in homage to the 50th anniversary of his death, the MNAC Library would be renamed the Joaquim Folch i Torres Library. We have produced this thematic guide to remember the person and his commitment towards Catalan art and culture.

I. The Rise of the Modern Artist
After the mid-19th century, society no longer identified art with the universal rules and collective values of the academic institution, but with that secret place that is the artist’s studio. Filled with hand-made objects, carpets, tapestries and works of art in careful disorder, like the ideal museum, or lit up by little coloured lights and dotted with the remains of an endless feast, like a pure continuation of bohemian life, the studio, as a private place, represents the most radical expression of the subjective individuality defended by the modern artist. The studio, then, has a ‘character’ that is identical to that of the work produced there.
