Denier

Monetary unit of Carolingian origin on which the mediaeval monetary system rested, based on the denier, the sou, and the pound. Also, in mediaeval times, a unit of measurement of the purity of silver, whose maximum degree is equivalent to an assay value of 12 deniers.
