The Sitesize collective iN RESiDENCE at Institut Poeta Maragall

SITESIZE (Elvira Pujol Masip and Joan Vila Puig)
A collective dedicated to creation and research on the contemporary metropolis. Since 2002, it has developed artistic projects and investigated autonomous forms of cultural production and community learning.
Among its extensive body of work, the following projects stand out: TERRApolis (2020–21), an audiovisual trilogy about the place of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, which takes shape through a journey into the physical, spiritual, human and non-human life of this territory; Serps d’aigua. Les rieres ocultes de Barcelona (2019–20), a project in urban semiotics shaped by the presence of waterways, produced with the support of La Capella; Laboratori d’Aprenentatge Comunitari (2017–18), in collaboration with La Virreina Centre de la Imatge; Agència de Turisme Popular (2016–20), or the construction of an alternative narrative of tourism in Barcelona; Aprendizaje autónomo (2014–15), research into forms of creation and reappropriation of life linked to libertarian culture and pedagogy. This research was awarded a research residency at MNCARS; the travelling exhibition ¡Cataluña termina aquí! ¡Aquí empieza Murcia! (2011–14), on urban spaces and popular learning; MAD#sub anotaciones desde el sub-suburbio de Madrid (2010–11), a visual essay on the southern outskirts of Madrid; Valparaíso Aula Permanente (2010), the creation of a learning community focused on the city of Valparaíso, Chile; AMPIN Habitar la palabra (2010), in Valparaíso intervenciones, produced by SEACEX, Chile; Narracions Metropolitanes / Aula Permanent, within the exhibition La comunitat inconfessable (2009), for the Catalan Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art; the project SIT Manresa, Servei d’Interpretació Territorial (2005–08), a public audit on the transformation of the city; and SIT Umeå Territorial Interpretation Service (2012) at Umeå University, Sweden.
Sitesize’s participation in the iN RESiDENCE programme will be developed with 4th-year ESO students at Institut Poeta Maragall, focusing on the urban environment and our relationship with Barcelona. We will explore creative tools and approaches for interpreting the city from an active standpoint in an extremely dynamic context. We will also investigate the multiple layers of transformation and the overlapping uses of its geography. The collaboration with the Museum will provide resources, materials from the collection and specific content to help us situate the research.
The residency proposal stems from the exhibition dedicated to Gaudí at the Museum. Our intention is to revisit the relationship between his architecture and the city through young people’s perspectives on his work, its historical context and its sites. The creative process will begin by opening up spaces for dialogue that will allow us to understand Gaudí’s legacy and the new interpretations associated with the contemporary urban phenomenon.
