The images in very high resolution will allow you to trace all the details of the beasts that decorate such well-known works in the collection and take a tour with a new look at the paintings of Sant Joan de Boí, Santa Maria de Taüll or San Pedro de Arlanza, the capitals of the castle of Camarasa or the Beam of Cardet

Animals are one of the most significant elements of medieval iconography and, at the same time, one of their least known aspects. Their importance has to do with the use that has been made of them in the world of the arts since time immemorial, and in their function, the symbolic content and the relationship that is established between man and the beast, which varies over time.

It was in the 7th century, with Saint Isidore of Seville and his Etymologies, that the foundations were laid to define the animal kingdom during the Middle Ages. In the twelfth century, the Physiologist, a treatise on natural history from the second century, was expanded with the inclusion of other new texts and chapters that will give rise to a very popular literary formula in medieval Europe, generically called «bestiary».
