Topic guide Annibale Carracci (1560-1609)

Juan Enriquez de Herrera, a Spanish banker in Rome, decided to hire for the decoration of the Herrera chapel an artist who had achieved fame for his work on the vault of the Farnese gallery: Annibale Carracci (1560-1609). The frescoes in the Herrera chapel were removed in the first half of the 19th century. Seven fragments were sent to the Museo de la Trinidad (later transferred to the Museo del Prado) and nine went to the Reial Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi (finally deposited in the collection of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya). The church of Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli in Rome was the destination of the rest (three frescoes that are no longer preserved today and the altar painting). The thematic guide focuses on Annibale Carracci, the protagonist of the travelling exhibition Annibale Carracci. The frescoes of the Herrera Chapel. The collaboration between the institutions has made possible the recovery for this exhibition of the frescoes and the altar painting that decorated the chapel of the church of Santiago de los Españoles in Rome. The exhibition is completed with a series of preparatory drawings that served as a composition study.
