The rooms of modern art with a new museography and a new story are alive and we are renewing them with new readings and a major presence of elements that allow to catch the social, historical and artistic context, and to highlight the international connections of the artists and movements of Barcelona and Catalonia. In 1898, for example,  on the magazine Luz  from Barcelona were published the chapters of España Negra, of the Belgian poet Émile Verhaeren. Assembled in the shape of book on the following year, and illustrated by Darío de Regoyos, they represent the culmination of a complex hispanophilia that, from the Romanticism, penetrates the symbolism of the change of century and lasts until avant-garde, good assuming dramatic related to the delay, the poverty and the excess, treating folklore that already at that time was known as "typically Spanish act". This statement is the one that explains a new room dedicated to the folklore and to the black painting.

We go in deep into one of the most representative artists of the Bohemian, the miserabilismo and the black painting: Isidre Nonell. His Bohemian thought led him to being interested for the darkest and primitive of the company, as worrying identification with the turpitudes of the misery and the "degeneracy". His portraits of poor, cretinous or, especially, gypsies, always different but always equal, suppose one of the culminations of the ideology of the Bohemian.
