In the middle
In the middle
In the middle is a curatorial project by Marc Caellas, framed within the Guèisers program at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. A cycle of artistic interventions by Rubén Ramos Nogueira, Esteban Feune de Colombi, Sofía Montenegro, and the duo Núria Lloansi and Pierre Peres.
There is a clear contrast between the patrimonial stability of museums and the pursuit of lived experience in contemporary artistic practices. In this context, the Museum's strategy has often been seen as betraying those practices that emerge from experience and transience. However, the Museum can also be a facilitator of experience: a place to wander, to generate narratives and stories.
In the middle proposes to use the Museum as a space of experience, where things happen beyond apparent patrimonial stillness—activating the Museum as a site of connection, relationships, and knowledge. It draws on practices that incorporate performance, theatricality, event, and fiction.
The actions and proposals of In the middle take place in between and at the heart of the Museum. The invited artists present works that challenge linear time or the inside-outside boundaries imposed by the architecture of the Museum itself. In the middle also offers an opportunity to access areas that, although located in central spaces, are usually left out of the suggested route. And it invites us to observe the behavior of cultural tourists—a particular kind of audience with its own agenda, positioned in between cultural policy, art, and the public.
