Description:

A collection of papers on the reproductions of Catalan Romanesque mural paintings made at the very beginning of the 20th century. The research on the work of copyists such as Rafael Martínez, Jaume Llongueras and Joan Vallhonrat allows to know better not only the patrimony which has brought international recognition to MNAC but also the cultural and historiographical processes that led to the discovery and reappraisal of Catalan Romanesque art from the mid-20th century on. All of this culminated by converting MNAC into the safeguard of invaluable artworks, as the apse and mural painting collection within its walls testifies. This volume allows the reader to trace the discovery, recovery and study of Romanesque murals in an initial phase going up to 1919, using extant studies and documents from the archives of the Junta de Museus (Museum Board). And he will also find documentary appendices and personal correspondence of Joan Vallhonrat, not to mention a cataloguing and list of the works exhibited.
