Carthusian

Carthusian

Name given to the contemplative order founded by St Bruno from Cologne and the monastery monks of this congregation founded in the 11th century, which derives from the name of the valley of the diocese of Grenoble where the first community was established (Chartreuse). The monasteries of this order are characterised by their structuring in individual and independent cells. The first Iberian foundation of the Carthusian  was that of Escaladei (Priorat). Other medieval foundations in the Crown of Aragon were the Carthusian of Montalegre (Tiana, Catalunya), of Valldemossa (Mallorca), and of Portaceli and of Valldecrist (Valencia).
