THE COLLECTION IN A BITE

One weekend a month, Amics visit the Museum’s galleries to taste the works in the collection, guided by our collaborators.

Ever since Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the tablets of the law on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed, celebrating feast days with due solemnity has been a divine command that the Catholic Church has sought to fulfil and enforce, setting aside special days of celebration in the calendar that have shaped the rhythm of believers’ lives over the centuries. These celebrations often have their roots in earlier cults and are almost always connected with the annual cycles of the Moon and the Sun, changes in weather and the seasons. More or less, like all beliefs and religions. Special days must be properly celebrated, and in the Christian liturgy of the High Middle Ages this involved both specific solemn rites and the presence of decoration and liturgical objects worthy of such important celebrations. During the months at the end of the year, filled with significant dates, we will explore the Romanesque art collection to see which works were particularly associated with the great annual Christian celebrations.
