Description:

We offer a visit to the Turó de la Rovira anti-aircraft battery and the extraordinary Civil War collection of the Museu Nacional in order to give a bigger perspective on how this conflict effected Barcelona and the world of arts. The traditional arts, such as painting, sculpture and engraving, from artists like Pablo Picasso and Juli González along with the new media -illustrated publications, posters, photography, photomontage, cinema etc. - served as a total mobilization that ended up to be a new aspiration for development of Modern Art and Avant-garde movement.

The visit also provides a view at the anti-aircraft searchlights of the Palau Nacional, now converted into one of the essential elements of the city night skyline, and the strategic location from which the air defence of Barcelona was organized: the privileged natural viewpoint of the Turó de la Rovira.

The guided visit is organized for groups, lasts 3 hours and takes place in two different locations of Barcelona: the Turó de la Rovira and the Palau Nacional.

  • Shuttle bus from Ronda Universitat, 11 to the Turó de la Rovira, where you will visit the anti-aircraft battery, which was placed there during the Civil War by the DECA (Special Defence against the Republic Airforces) and was an essential part of the defensive system of Barcelona. During the bus trip you will get acknowledged with the impacts of the Civil War on Barcelona.
  • Shuttle bus to the Museu Nacional, where you will have the guided tour to the rooms devoted to the Civil War and will go up to the roof to see the anti-aircraft searchlights, where you will find out about the role of Montjuïc during the war, one of the strategic points in the city that was the area of the heaviest artillery during the conflict.
