Programa symposium The theoretical years (pdf - 129 Kb - Catalan)

Third conference about the theory, the review and the artistic practice during the 60s and the 70s in Catalonia, Valencia, Balearic Islands, and by extension about the relations between artists, critics and theorists with the rest of Spain and Europe during those critical years. The symposium belongs inside the research project The theory and review of art in Catalonia, Valencia and Balearics between 1880 and 1980, by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, sponsored by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad and directed by Antoni Marí.

With this symposium we want to go in depth in our debates, the theoretic production and the new artistic options that are developed during the crucial decades of the 60s and the 70s of the 20th century. Those were the years of the Pop Art and the New Figuration appearance, that surpassed existentialist positions of post-war to propose new ways of resistance in which the homologation with the international cultural models is essential. Afterwards, the new conceptual practices created intense controversy that coexisted with the alternatives of the underground, before diapering at the gates of postmodernity. The diversity and complexity of the artistic proposals revolved around the centrality of the theoretical debate about the definition of art and its impact on society. That’s why we talk about “theoretical years”, because it was years in which the of search for new forms of expression and enthusiasm characterized a deep generational break, this break and this riot were made from positions in which practice was unthinkable without the theory, and life was indecipherable without politics.

In 2008 the symposium was about the “Noucentisme” (The “Noucentisme” imagination) and in 2013 about the post-war and the 50s (Cautious modernity). This year it’s a continuation of where we left on in Cautious modernity around 1962.
