Description:

Zurbarán at the MNAC. Catalogue on the exhibit organized by MNAC on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Francisco de Zurbarán. The book is structured around five themes: the first three refer to Zurbarán's role as interpreter of Counter Reformation religious thought, and focus on 'The Immaculate Conception', 'Christ on the Cross' and 'Franciscan Images '. The fourth section, 'Poetics of Tranquillity', focuses on the painter's role in translating abstract and natural plastic values, intimate devotion, scenes of daily life and still life. And the last section of the book addresses the work of Juan de Zurbarán, the shortlived son of Francisco, who excelled in his cultivation of the still life. A carefully selected bibliography is also included, followed by the Spanish and English translations of the texts.
