Support

The element used as a base with which to give underlying material structure to an artwork. Traditionally, the most popular supports have included wood, cloth, metal, stone, glass, paper, parchment, plaster, ceramic and leather. The state of conservation of the support often affects the stability and the surface layers of the artwork.
