Oil Painting

Oil Painting

A painting technique in which the pigments are bound with a drying oil such as linseed (from flax seed), walnut or poppy-seed. Linseed oil is the most widely used: it dries quickly in the sun, or with the aid of a drying agent, usually a metallic salt. When the oil is diluted with a lot of solvent the medium is said to be lean.
