The Banc Sabadell Art Collection deposits two emblematic works in the museum
Two emblematic works by Rusiñol and Gimeno have been incorporated in the Museu Nacional thanks to the Banc Sabadell Art Collection
Ramon Casas, velocipedist, by Santiago Rusiñol, and Children reading (Francesc and Josep), by Francesc Gimeno, will be exhibited in the Modern Art rooms
Ramon Casas, velocipedist is one of Rusiñol's major portraits in which he immortalises his friend and painter. This work, of great quality and uniqueness, unites two pioneers of artistic modernity at the turn of the century. Casas was just over twenty years old and projected himself as one of the artists of the future. He represents himself in a decadent setting, next to his bicycle and dressed as a sportsman, the image of the modern artist.
The work is exhibited next to Tándem, the work that Casas painted for the tavern, the Quatre Gats, and where he appears self-portrayed next to Pere Romeu.
Children reading (Francesc and Josep) is one of Gimeno's most emblematic creations and one of his best domestic interiors, quite possibly the leading theme of his production along with the self-portraits. He portrays two of his children, Francesc and Josep, and combines the humility of the space with a tender look at childhood. Francesc and Josep were born in 1899 and 1901, respectively, and would be the subject of other portraits, but this one that represents them together is one of the most relevant. The Museu Nacional has an important series of paintings by Gimeno, also based on domestic settings.
This deposit is a further step in the collaboration of the Banc Sabadell Art Collection with the Museu Nacional, which this year has also resulted in the ID Project exhibition, with photographs by Jordi Bernadó belonging to the Banc Sabadell Art Collection.
The Banc Sabadell Art Collection
Considered one of the most important corporate collections in the country, the Banc Sabadell Art Collection manages the works of art owned by Banc Sabadell, a collection that increases year after year with new incorporations. Currently, the collection includes works by all the Spanish and international artists which are essential in any collection of contemporary Spanish art.
The collection also has a philanthropic aim and with its activity it boosts creation, the system and the art market. On the one hand, the collection regularly organises exhibitions of its collections in different cultural spaces in the country and, on the other hand, it also loans collections for temporary exhibitions to various cultural entities and museums.
