The city’s museums, closer to the elderly

The city’s museums, closer to the elderly

Date range:
29/06/2022

The “Biggest Museum” project begins, aimed at the elderly in care homes and municipal spaces with the aim, on the one hand, of encouraging interest and artistic creation and, on the other, of stimulating conversation and socialisation among the elderly from a cultural proposal. Until December, there will be sixty free-of-charge workshops in about fifteen museums in the city.

In these workshops, four two-hour sessions, images and photographs from different museums will be used. They will culminate in a collective creation by the elderly that will be exhibited in one of the participating museums.

Each group will perform an observation exercise of these images and a joint selection of twelve images will be made, with a process facilitated by specialists so that the final choice is meaningful for the whole group. Once the selection has been made, the participants will take a copy home, where they will have to take a photograph with their mobile phone, tablet or digital camera with the aim of finding the dialogue with the chosen image of the collection, to generate a new photograph in their everyday spaces, in their home, so that they find parallels and dialogues between the images provided by the museums and the new photographs generated.

The aim is to promote knowledge and facilitate the enjoyment of the elderly in museums, as participation in these spaces has been shown to generate physical and emotional well-being and to foster healthy socialisation.

The participating museums are the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the Museu d’Història de Catalunya, the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, the Museu Frederic Marès, the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya, the Fundació Joan Miró, the Fundació Tàpies, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the Museu Olímpic de Barcelona, the Museu del Disseny, the Fundació Suñol, the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món, the Monestir de Pedralbes and the Arts Santa Mònica.
