EL CALVARI ENTERS THE MNAC

On January 8ththe Minister of Culture, César Antonio Molina , presented to the MNAC a 15th-century Gothic painting El Calvari, from the Girona School. The panel shows the Christ's Calvary scene and has been purchased by the Ministry of Culture for the sum of 330,000 euros, with the aim of enriching the Museum’s Gothic art collection.

The panel, measuring 96 x 77 cm, is in a good state of preservation and is a work of great quality. It comes from an old altarpiece that was dismantled and has to be associated with the group of works attributed to the painters Joan Antigó and Honorat Borrassà, who worked in Girona. Like other works by this circle, El Calvari illustrates the great quality and originality of the painting done in Girona in the International Gothic style. The fact that few pieces by this school have been preserved increases the panel’s interest and value, and it will decisively enrich the Museum’s permanent exhibition.

Briefly will be announced when this piece will be exhibited in the Gothic Art Museum collection.
