Description:

The paintings from Bellcaire d'Empordà represent the Catalan and Aragonese pictorial strands related to Le Poitou, in central France. This fragment forms part of the Descent of the Holy Ghost that presided over the church apse, of which another fragment is preserved at the Museu d'Art de Girona (part of the Museu Diocesà collections). Here we see two of the apostles who were depicted at the bottom of the composition, beneath the tongues of fire emerging from the Holy Ghost. This theme, rare in Romanesque painting, symbolises the beginning of evangelisation on the part of the apostles.
