Description:

The year 1894 saw the demise of the three outstanding Catalan landscape painters of the 19th century: Lluís Rigalt, Ramon Martí Alsina and Joaquim Vayreda. A special exhibit was organized to commemorate the centennial of that triple loss, accompanied by this catalogue tracing the trajectory of Catalan landscape painting in the 19th century through these three painters: Rigalt (1814-1894), leading figure of Romantic landscape painting; Martí Alsina (1826-1894), of realist landscape painting; and Vayreda (1843-1894), of landscape painting under the influence of the French Barbizon school. The works catalogued show the passage from the panoramic, archaeological and idealized landscape painting of Romanticism, to that based on positivistic foundations grounded in the observation and study of physical reality of Realism, turning finally to the portrayal of the changing and peremptory nature of reality, a tendency which would crystallize with Impressionism.
