Nadia Hafid iN RESiDENCE at Institut Jaume Balmes

Nadia Hafid (Terrassa, 1990) graduated in Fine Arts from the Universitat de Barcelona and studied Applied Arts to Walls at Escola Llotja. She combines illustration and comics, and her drawings have appeared on covers for El País’s Babelia supplement, as well as in articles in international publications such as The New York Times, The Economist, The New Yorker and The Washington Post, among others.

El buen padre (2020), her debut with Sapristi, won the Best Emerging Author Award from the Association of Comic Critics. It was also included in Rockdeluxe’s list of the 100 best Spanish comics and featured in Jot Down magazine’s selection of the best comics. In 2021, it was nominated for Best New Work at the Barcelona International Comic Fair. It has been translated into French by the publisher Casterman and into Turkish by Beta Basim Yayin Dagitim.

Chacales, her second comic, published by Sapristi in 2022, received the El Ojo Crítico 2022 award in the comics category and was nominated for Best Work at the 41st edition of the Barcelona International Comic Fair.

She took part in the exhibition Constel·lació gràfica at CCCB (2022–2023), dedicated to experimental and avant-garde comics.

She teaches editorial illustration on the Master’s programme in Comics and Illustration at Elisava.

Founded in 1845, Institut Jaume Balmes is Barcelona’s oldest secondary school and one of the educational institutions most deeply rooted in the city’s contemporary history. Since 1942, it has been located in the Eixample district, at the junction of Pau Claris and Consell de Cent.
