Cristina Lucas' work delves into the mechanisms of power that determine our lives. Currently, her interest is focused on the fracture between society and nature and the emergencies arising from climate change. Based on the observation that the elements and minerals present on our planet, they are also present in our body, the artist begins to research and work plastically with these elements (zinc, magnesium, iron, etc.). In her research at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, she follows the trail of one of them, cobalt, an element with which pigments are created (the well-known cobalt blue), also present in our body as a component of vitamin B12 and, finally, a key mineral in the electrical and technology industries. In the museum, the artist finds a work that perfectly synthesises this point of intersection from cobalt: Mural for IBM (1978) carried out by Joan Miró and Joan Gardy Artigas of colours that include cobalt blue.
The public presentation of the research carried out by Cristina Lucas takes the form of a performative talk in the Dome Room where the Mural for IBM is located where the common thread of cobalt brings us closer to its astrophysical origins, its functions in our organism, its scarcity in the earth's crust, the high demand from the electrical industries and, finally, the need to look for alternative options to the future scenarios that are presented to us.
This intervention forms part of the programme Geysers at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, curated by Montse Badia.
