Counterfeiting is a phenomenon that is part of monetary culture and that must be kept in mind when studying the circulation of currency. Its universality coexists with political borders and traps them, and there have not been rare to find cases of currency counterfeiting from one country to another taking advantage of various reasons and opportunities. In this way, persecuted, tolerated or encouraged - depending on the circumstances of the moment -, there is always counterfeit money.
Currency counterfeiting is one of the lines of research that has been explored for years at the Numismatic Office of Catalonia and which, far from being exhausted, always offers new avenues of work. The organisation of a second international study colloquium on currency counterfeiting, almost a decade after the first, demonstrates this. In the first, it focused on the duality between legal manufacture and counterfeiting. In this second, the transnational and cross-border dimension of the phenomenon in the last three centuries is highlighted. The participation of very relevant researchers in this field of research in very distant territorial areas ensures the rigor of the contributions.
The holding of this second international colloquium should also allow the confluence of three independent lines of research on the phenomenon, confront very diverse research experiences and explore future collaborations. All in all, with the desire to take account of the work done and in search of a knowledge transfer, in an open format, to all the public interested in an always exciting subject that has the Museu Nacional as a forum for dissemination.
