Commented works

The celebration of the XVI National Congress of Numismatics. Treasures and monetary findings: protection, study and musealization hosted by the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya is an unavoidable occasion to expose to the public all the monetary sets guarded in the reserves of the Gabinet Numismàtic de Catalunya and publish them online accessible for everybody.

The Museu contributes directly with the aims of the Congress and complies with the premise of enabling the accessibility to their collections, and in particular, of these sets that are relevant for the knowledge of circulation and treasure to number in a determined time. It is, also, an invitation to visit the permanent numismatic hall to roam in the past in a singular itinerary throughout a thread about the treasures and monetary findings highlighted. Finally, this is one more way to welcome the congressmen.

Topic Guide "The 1929 Internacional Exposition of Barcelona"

On the occasion of the holding of the 1929 International Exposition, the city of Barcelona began to carry out a series of urban reforms. Whereas in the Universal Exposition of 1888 the modernisation of Barcelona focused on the Parc de la Ciutadella and its surroundings, in 1929 the mountain of Montjuïc would be the protagonist. As a gateway to the enclosure, two towers were erected that evoked the Campanile di San Marco (Venice).

The social and urban transformation, as well as the ambitious lighting project that took place almost a century ago, required a large economic investment. The Plaça d’Espanya, the Olympic Stadium, the Teatre Grec, the Poble Espanyol, the National Palace and the Magic Fountain are some of the buildings that have their origins in the Exposition. Paradoxically, exhibitions of ephemeral architecture boosted a new urban landscape that ended up being perpetuated.

The Barcelona International Exposition was inaugurated on 19th May, 1929 and came to a close on 15th January, 1930. The Joaquim Folch i Torres Library preserves the mayor’s invitations to the opening and closing ceremonies.
