 Catalogue of the exhibition presented by the Numismatic Department of Catalonia, from June 5th 2008 to May 3rd 2009, with which it is joining in the events to commemorate the bicentenary of the start of the Peninsular War (1808-1814). The commemoration is an opportunity to review such an intense period of history from the perspective of numismatics in Catalonia and Europe. The exhibition catalogue presents twelve articles and fifty files commenting upon the main pieces in the exhibition. The texts, written by renowned specialists in the field, frame and contextualize the phenomenon of coinage in the Principality and in neighbouring countries? France, Italy and other Spanish provinces? while also reviewing various aspects like the loss of patrimony due to works of art being melted down or the technical aspects of minting and the organization of the mints. Other themes dealt with include the creation of military decorations and, above all, the striking of medals for commemorative and propaganda purposes. Finally, the publication includes a CD with the catalogue-inventory of the Cabinet?s collection of coins issued during this period in Catalonia.
