Organized in collaboration with the Museo del Prado, this exhibition takes a look, through about 60 works, at the still life genre in Spain, an extraordinarily exceptional chapter in the history of modern painting.
The exhibition brings together works by the great masters of the genre: Goya, Zurbarán, Sánchez Cotán or Van der Hamen, from the Museo del Prado and the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.
The show presents about 40 paintings in Barcelona from the Naseiro Collection, a very important collection specializing in Spanish still lifes, recently acquired by the State for the Museo del Prado. In this collection there are some of the masterpieces of the genre, such as Still Life with Artichokes, Flowers and Glass Containers, painted in 1627 by Juan van der Hamen.
Apart from the works in the Naseiro Collection, the Museo del Prado and the MNAC contribute a selection of the best still lifes from their collections, with names like Juan Sánchez Cotán, Juan van der Hamen, Francisco and Juan de Zurbarán, Antoni Viladomat, Luis Paret y Alcázar, Luis Egidio and Francisco de Goya.
The exhibition brings together an exceptional group of paintings dating from the first half of the 17th to the 19th century, and offers a view of the historical development of this pictorial genre in Spain.
