Description:
What happens when a museum becomes not only a centre for the exhibition of artistic creations, but also a space for exhibiting living bodies and actions? Well, some of the works start to show an unusual vitality.

If you still don't know what it means when someone refers to the "living arts", then make a date with Irene Vicente Salas, of the company La Reina Alcalde. She is the creator of the temporary stage exhibition Corpus, a show specifically designed for the museum space that brings the performing arts (one of the living arts, which include music, dance and the circus arts) to an environment where you more commonly encounter fine art works, such as paintings or sculptures. An analysis of some of the pieces exhibited at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya inspired updated interpretations of the works. These are staged using the bodies of performers who engage in prolonged actions. What do these bodies represent? Please take a look at the programme: like the rest of the works in the Museum, these performers are in and of themselves a work of art - a very lively one - and they deserve a brief introduction. Walk freely through the rooms of the museum and wander back if you want to see how a performer’s actions have evolved. The fine arts have long been incorporated into the world of the stage, but now it is theatre that has moved into the museum.

Irene Vicente Salas, an art historian specialising in the history of the performing arts and partially trained as a director and playwright at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, offers us the experience of visiting a museum with living works. The creator of the company La Reina Alcalde, she has dedicated her work to revisiting the prevailing stereotypes about women's bodies, from the earliest representations to present day, and to observing how these representations mark the way in which women relate to the world. The piece we can see in this edition of the Grec Festival in Barcelona is an extension of the first creation of the same title that was presented at the Frederic Marès Museum as part of the Creació i Museu programme at the Grec 2022.

A co-production of the Grec 2023 Barcelona Festival, Titus Andrònic SL, Barcelona Crea 2020 grant, the Grant for Research and Innovation in the Fields of Visual Arts, Architecture and Design, Performing Arts and Music and the Thought of OSIC 2020 and the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.
