Place:
Parliament building
Description:

The Museu Nacional has joined forces with the Parliament of Catalonia to present a photographic exhibition, curated by Roser Cambray, to be held in the rooms of the Parliament building to mark International Women’s Day.

Rosa Szücs del Olmo (Barcelona, 1911 - 26 June 1984), a Catalan amateur photographer, has not been celebrated for her work until recently. A married housewife, the photographs she took gave her great creative freedom, and she won prizes for them on several occasions. Her photographs date mainly from the late 1950s and the 1960s, a time when women were often excluded from education and cultural creation. She learned the technique on the short courses of the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya (Catalan Photographic Association) as a member of the Women’s Group, created in 1959, and she later became the Group’s laboratory monitor.

The exhibition ROSA SZÜCS (1911-1984): Convergences in a Changing World sets out to highlight the work of this photographer who, with a highly personal gaze, captured with her camera the contrasts in the reality that surrounded her. Portraits of a society in the 1960s that, despite initial resistance, started to change very quickly. A gaze at once social and documentary that seeks to portray poor people, jobs, children, the city and its transformation, but which focuses above all on women and their immediate surroundings.

The photographs were deposited on long-term loan by the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya and they are part of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya’s photography collection.
