Illustrated books of school groups
Illustrated books of school groups
The Patronat Escolar de Barcelona (The Barcelona School Board) which enabled one of the most important and successful pedagogical experiences that has been carried out in Catalonia, was a mixed organisation, depending on Barcelona City Council and the Ministry of Public Instruction, created in 1922 and dissolved in 1939. It was suppressed by the dictatorship of Primo de River between 1924 and 1930.
It created its public school network, which was characterised by its advanced pedagogical character. Each school group had a set of books in the classrooms and a space adapted for the library service within the centre. All this to reinforce and complement teaching, while encouraging a love of reading among students. In addition, there were travelling school libraries, which travelled between the different centres and had regulations for using the library service.
The Joaquim Folch i Torres Library conserves around seventy documents that belonged to the school groups and which serve to provide an outline of the children's publishing landscape of the Second Republic. We offer you a selection in a small virtual exhibition.
