Cobalt Blue

Potassium silicate with cobalt oxide. An artificial pigment employed in the manufacture of glass as early as the Middle Ages. Having been used first in fresco painting, it became increasingly popular in easel painting in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It discolours when bound with oil.
