- The Ministry, the Government of Catalonia, and the MNAC have agreed that the museum will take charge of managing and programming the cultural activities of the space
- The building, one of the most important examples of Catalan rationalist architecture, was acquired by the Ministry last January and will open to the public in 2026.
The Ministry of Culture has transferred the management of Casa Gomis to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). This transfer is the result of an agreement between the Ministry and the Government of Catalonia, both of which are part of the MNAC consortium.
The MNAC, which will take on responsibility for programming cultural activities, organizing visits, and managing the site, is an internationally renowned museum institution that also leads the Catalan Art Museums Network—a network that connects the region’s major art museums in a shared strategy to promote and preserve Catalonia’s artistic heritage. Casa Gomis will thus become a key space for understanding the evolution of modern art in the region. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture will oversee any necessary renovation and maintenance work.
Casa Gomis, acquired by the Ministry in January, is a residence of great historical and artistic value—an essential work in the history of 20th-century rationalist architecture in Catalonia. It is located on the beachfront within the natural landscape of La Ricarda, in the Llobregat Delta, a high-value ecological area protected by the European Union.
The acquisition was made with the intention of protecting and conserving the building as part of the public heritage and transforming it into a cultural center open to the public. Its opening is scheduled for February 2026 to coincide with Barcelona's designation as World Capital of Architecture and the International Union of Architects (UIA) Congress, which the city will also host next year.
The architectural value of Casa Gomis
Casa Gomis is a unique example of a mid-20th-century upper-class Catalan residence and served as a gathering place for intellectuals and artists. It provides a privileged setting for understanding the development of avant-garde culture in Catalonia during the last century.
Architecturally, the building is a clear example of how an abstract architectural concept was adapted to a very specific place and landscape. The symbiosis between the house and its surroundings is expressed through a single-story structure nestled under the canopy of pine trees. The transition between the natural landscape and the central area occupied by the house is achieved through a large horizontal platform that hosts a garden designed with simplicity: grass lawns, walkways, and paved areas laid out in orthogonal lines that extend the house’s structural geometry, along with a reflecting pool.
The residence was designed by Barcelona architect Antoni Bonet Castellana for the couple Ricardo Gomis and Inés Bertrand and was built between 1957 and 1963. In 2021, it was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN) in the category of Historic Monument by the Catalan government—the highest protection status under current heritage law in Catalonia.
One of its unique features is that, after six decades of use, the building retains its original characteristics. The roofs and exterior woodwork were carefully restored in 1997. It also preserves its original furniture, much of which was designed by the architect himself and is included in the heritage protection dossier.
