Description:

Registration open for the XXVIII Monetary History Seminar of the Crown of Aragon, which this year is devoted to the manufacture of currency and technological renewal.

A coin is a product manufactured in series and, therefore, subject to a manufacturing process. From ancient times to the modern age different elaboration systems have been used that the guest speakers will present in detail. It will begin with the analysis of metal’s work operations in the currency houses and will continue with the manual stamping to hammer, which was the most important during the Middle Ages.

In modern times, two mechanical systems subsequently appeared, which allowed them to produce a more finished coin and, therefore, one that was more difficult to counterfeit. These are laminating mills and flywheel presses. The last ones are associated with the introduction of the monetary corner arrangement as an ornament and security against cutting.

The fact that in the Royal Seca of Barcelona the three main manufacturing systems were experienced throughout the medieval and modern age will allow us to close the process avatars with examples of pieces kept in the same Gabinet Numismàtic de Catalunya.
