The man portrayed in the painting is Lluís Magrans i Almirall, sailor from Sitges known as Malavida. He had a house on the beach of San Sebastián, where Rusiñol kept his works before he had the Cau Ferrat.

Suzanne Valadon i Santiago Rusiñol es van conèixer a través de Miquel Utrillo. Aquesta obra va ser pintada al pis de Rusiñol al Quai Bourbon. N'hi ha una altra de gairebé idèntica -segurament realitzada alhora, amb una variació lleugera a la perspectiva- feta per Miquel Utrillo. Aquesta segona obra, actualment en lloc desconegut, va ser propietat de Joan Rusiñol, nebot del pintor, que la va prestar per ser exposada a la Sala Parés de Barcelona el 1954.
