Parchment

Animal hide, flayed, soaked, de-haired, treated with lime and stretched, parchment was the principal support for manuscripts texts and paintings up until the Middle Ages. The two side sare quite different: the inner is whiter and the outer, darker. Finer quality parchment, often from a very young or unborn animal, is known as vellum.
