Description:

Coins in the Reign of Augustus Caesar. Résumé of the lectures given as part of the I Course on the Monetary History of Hispania (November 13 and 14, 1997), 'Coins in the Reign of Augustus Caesar'. These lectures review how the program of reforms set in motion by Augustus affected coins. Thus it is seen how during Augustus' reign, certain favourably situated cities in Hispania initiated new mintages in bronze with gold engravings, distinct from the former indigenous coinage. For example, at this point the Emperor's name and portrait begin to appear on the obverse of most coin issues, coinciding with the implantation of the use of Latin script in inscriptions. Concurrently, as a consequence of the Cantabrian Wars, the use of money in Hispania was becoming more and more widespread during this era, due to both the new peninsular issues and to the arrival of currency fabricated in other parts of the Empire.
