The book brings together the reports of the study session on coin forgery in Catalonia during the 19th century, held at the Museu Nacional dArt de Catalunya in December 2011 as a follow-up to the temporary exhibition Counterfeit Coinage. From Antiquity to the Euro, held at the same museum, and to its catalogue. The reports, jointly published by the museum and the Pompeu Fabra University, give researchers and the general public a vision from different, complementary angles of the part played by counterfeit coinage in 19th-century Catalonia. In this respect, it presents a necessarily fragmented, but highly evocative round-up of accounts of this phenomenon ranging from legislative and judicial repression of this offence to the study of as yet undisclosed remains (coins, tools and machinery) unearthed by archaeologists in different parts of Catalonia, and taking in the coverage it was given in the press of the time.
