Two Gypsy Women

After a long stay in Paris and having finally settled in Barcelona in 1900, Nonell, who died early, concentrated on portraying marginalised characters and produced a series featuring Gypsy women which almost monopolised his production, despite the hostility with which it was received by part of the public and the most conservative critics. In these works, which manage to convey the human being's most profound loneliness, Nonell struggles obsessively with colour as the chief element with which to construct his volumes. This work has been selected for the project 'Partage Plus - Digitising and Enabling Art Nouveau for Europeana'
