Renaissance and Baroque Art
By virtue of the instrument of his martyrdom, a spear, this youthful unbearded figure has been identified as the apostle St Thomas. In the background we observe sgraffiti decorated with grotesque elements, characteristic of the early XVI-century renaissance style. The piece would have formed part of an apostolate, of which a further two are preserved at the Museu del Patriarca (Valencia). The panel is attributed to Pedro Romana, a painter active in Córdoba, and reveals clear stylistic affinities with the Flemish tradition, although we detect the incipient influence of developments taking place in northern Italy.
