Saint James the Great
In the panel the saint, portrayed as a pilgrim, appears in the middle of a space shaped by a low wall with quatrefoil openings and a tiled floor decorated with eight-pointed stars. He is wearing a leather tunic, a cloak that is red on the inside, and the wide-brimmed hat and the shepherd's shoulder bag, both decorated with the scallops of Compostela, elements typical of a pilgrim's clothing. He is flanked by two flying angels holding his staff and the book that he has in his left hand. Some historians have concluded that the panel comes from the high altarpiece in the church of Sant Jaume in Algemesí (Valencia), a work by Gonçal Peris recorded in 1423. Recently, and for reasons of style, the work has been more closely associated with the production of the Catalan Jaume Mateu.
