Ferrer Miró was one of the people who introduced anecdotal realism into our country following a stay in Italy during the 1870s. On his return to Barcelona he shared a studio with Romà Ribera and accepted the demands of a public eager for artistic manifestations reflecting the habits of the nascent local bourgeoisie. Here the painter depicts the shop window of the future gallery or exhibition room, for which he won a Gold Medal at the 1888 Universal Exposition.
