Medieval Gothic Art
Attributed to Nicolás Francés, the foreign author of the famous Gothic high retable at Leon Cathedral and one of the leading painters from the second third of the XVth century in Castile, the panel originally belonged to the Retable of St Michael at Villalpando. It depicts the famous miracle performed by the Archangel, in which the cowherd Gargano receives the impact of the arrow he had shot at a bull which had strayed from his herd. From this now disassembled retable other panels have come down to us, of which one is preserved at the Museu de Montserrat and another at the Cincinnati Museum of Art (Ohio).
