This imposing woman is Lady Alethea Talbot, the wife of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel and Earl Marshal at the courts of Kings James I and Charles I of England. In 1606 the earl, a Catholic, married Alethea Talbot, the daughter of the Earl of Shrewsbury, who inherited a huge fortune.
