In the beginning of the 3rd century BC, the Greek colony of Rhode started to mint silver drachmas, with a female head and the Greek legend Rodeton facing up and a rose on the back. The head is represented in profile, decorated with a spiky hairstyle and with a triple pendant earring and necklace. The modelling was done following the best artistic tradition of simple Greek.Rhode chose a rose for the back of the drachmas in a clear allusion to the name of the colony.
