Principality of Catalonia

During the 'War of the Reapers' (1640-1652), significant changes took place in the currency minted in Catalonia. At first, issues continued with the name of King Philip IV, although new monetary values were manufactured. When Catalonia declared independence in 1641, the king's name was replaced with the legend PRINCIPATVS CATALONIAE, at the same time as mints opened in towns all over Catalonia, amongst which Vic stands out. As a distinguishing feature the municipality added the name of the town to the design on the reverse, along with the local coat of arms against an eight-pointed cross.
