New display of Renaissance and Baroque Art Collection

New display of Renaissance and Baroque Art Collection

Date range:
16/01/2017

Next Wednesday, January 24, we will inaugurate the new presentation of the Renaissance and Baroque collection. With this remodeling, we will discover under a new perspective about 210 artworks from the XVI to XIX centuries (paintings, prints and drawings, sculptures and decorative arts, as well as an interesting bibliographical collection), with a large number of commented posters, scope texts and exhibition capsules. The graphic elements of the rooms will be complemented with resources on the museum's website, in order to complement and enrich the visit.

The remodeling, curated by Francesc Quílez, collections’ coordinator, and Joan Yeguas, curator of Renaissance and Baroque, with the advice of Juan José Lahuerta, is an in-depth review of the collection, which reflects the latest research and reveals some new attributions. It also makes visible the Cambó Bequest and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, integrated into the new discourse. Both collections provide the international counterpoint to the Catalan and Spanish artworks of the collection.

The new display makes it possible to revalue the strengths of the collection in which the Catalan 16th century stands out, with artists such as Ayne Bru, Pere Nunyes or Damià Forment. The Spanish Golden Age, with a very important set of works by Velázquez, Ribera, Zurbarán, Maíno or Pedro de Mena. The Venetian 16th century, with the presence of first-rate authors such as Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bassano, Sebastiano del Piombo and El Greco, or the 18th Italian century, with works by Tiepolo, Canaletto or Cerutti. Other masters of recognized prestige, such as Fray Angelico, Fragonard, Cranach or Goya, are also present.

To celebrate the opening of the collection, the museum has organized various activities around this collection:

Inaugural concert Sonorous altarpieces from Renaissance and Baroque , January 24, 6:30 p.m.

Screening Girl With a Pearl Earring (2003), February 3, 6:30 pm
